In 2020, after the coronavirus started, Young Thug talked to radio host Big Boy. He said canceling concerts and festivals made him lose a lot of money.

“If I usually make $500,000 for a show, missing ten shows means I lose $5 million.”

He also said he loses even more money because he still spends a lot.

“I might spend one or two million dollars just during quarantine. I take care of my mom, dad, and family. I tell them to stay home, but they get bored. Every week, they want to stay in a fancy hotel or a big penthouse. That costs money. When I don’t make money from shows, I still spend the same amount that I lose.”

Personal Life of Young Thug

Young Thug has six children—three sons and three daughters—from four different women. He became a father at 17.

In April 2015, he got engaged to Jerrika Karlae. She runs a swimsuit brand, and her mother managed the late Young Dolph.

In September 2016, after releasing his mixtape Jeffery, Thug bought his first home in Buckhead, Atlanta. The house spans over 11,000 square feet. It includes six bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, a theater room, a full bar, and a four-car garage.

As a child, Thug witnessed tragedy. Someone shot and killed his older brother right in front of their home.

In April 2020, he shared a near-death experience during a concert livestream. He recalled feeling numb and unable to move. He called for an ambulance, but paramedics had to lift him from the bed. At the hospital, doctors diagnosed him with kidney and liver failure. His condition was so severe that he felt like he had briefly died.

In December 2020, Thug and Jerrika Karlae ended their engagement. In 2021, he started dating Atlanta singer Mariah the Scientist.

Legal Issues and Controversies

In April 2015, people from the Bloods gang shot at Lil Wayne’s tour bus. The bus driver sued Young Thug, Cash Money Records, Young Money Records, and Birdman.

In January 2017, Young Thug got sued for missing a concert at Sahlen’s Stadium. He had signed a $55,000 contract but didn’t show up. This wasn’t the first time. In April 2016, a Texas company also sued him for skipping another concert.

In March 2017, a woman said Young Thug slapped her outside a nightclub. She had been arguing with his fiancée, Jerrika Karlae, when Thug stepped in. In April 2017, the court dropped the charge because there wasn’t enough evidence.

That same month, police searched his home in Sandy Springs, Georgia. They charged him with having cocaine, marijuana, and three guns. His lawyers said the search was illegal because police didn’t have a warrant. The court dropped most charges but kept the felony marijuana charge. Around this time, a company sued him for not paying nearly $2.2 million for his house.

On September 24, 2017, police arrested Young Thug in Brookhaven, Georgia. They charged him with drug and gun possession. He got out of jail three days later after posting bond. In September 2018, he was charged again for having meth, hydrocodone, and marijuana with intent to sell. He also faced charges for having amphetamine, alprazolam, codeine (two counts), and a gun. These charges came from his 2017 arrest.

On May 9, 2022, police arrested Young Thug again in Atlanta. He and rapper Gunna were among 28 people accused of being part of YSL, a gang involved in crimes. The Fulton County District Attorney charged them under the Georgia RICO Act, which targets criminal groups. After searching Thug’s house, police added seven more charges for having illegal drugs and guns. The court denied him bond several times, so he stayed in jail until October 31, 2024.

His trial started on November 27, 2023. Five other people were on trial with him. On December 12, 2023, the court paused the trial because one of his co-defendants, Shannon Stillwell, got stabbed in jail. The trial started again on January 2, 2024.

On October 31, 2024, Young Thug took a plea deal and got released. He was sentenced to 40 years—five in prison, 15 on probation, and 20 more years in prison if he broke the rules of probation. Since he had already spent five years in jail, he didn’t have to serve more prison time.

As part of his release, he cannot go to Metro Atlanta for ten years. He is not allowed to make gang-related music. He also has to do four anti-gang presentations or concerts each year in Atlanta. He cannot talk to gang members or co-defendants, except for Gunna and his brother.
